Fernweh: German (n.) an ache for distant places; a craving for travel; being homesick for a place you’ve never been.
Although there’s no direct English translation and I don’t speak a lick of German, I understand the meaning of this word in my gut. I am a traveler to my core and know what it feels like to ache for faraway soils that my feet have yet to trod. The world is a treasure trove of possible destinations and I can’t wait to unearth that next treasure… (via travelinggourmande)

I’m very fortunate to belong in a family afflicted with serious, incurable wanderlust. Combining all of our travels, I’m estimating that we’ve probably covered over 50 countries around the world. We inherited the gypsy gene from our mother, who went to the Balkans only a few months after the peace accords were signed to end the Bosnian War. This is the same woman who went ahead with a planned trip to the Holy Land a week after Israel bombed Lebanon, before there was any certainty as to whether Lebanon would retaliate. With a mother whose adventurous travels gave us pause, we grew up thinking our own travels are pretty much fair game.

This photo was taken by my sister (DCNomad) during her recent desert safari in Oman. I love this photo so much, I felt compelled to share it here. After seeing her amazing photos from there, I’ve now added Oman on my bucket list.
